The Schiava has a long tradition in South Tyrol and in the Middle Ages it was known as “Farnatzer”. Until a few decades ago, 80 percent of the area in South Tyrol was cultivated with Schiava. In the meantime, this percentage has dropped beyond under 20 percent, however the Schiava is still the most cultivated variety in the region.
